Being a more active participant in your own care can save your life.
Everyone has the ability to seek better choice and control in health care decision-making., which is especially important as we age. How do we bring a focus for improved quality of life into our health care discussions with our providers? This session will focus on some of the most important ways people can become full participants in their healthcare, by applying common health advocacy skills. Be ready for an interactive, hands-on session, with must-know tips for anyone who has ever assisted family, friends or themselves in navigating the health care system.
Our speaker, Robin Shapiro, has devoted her career to helping patients find their voice and understand how to improve their care. She has a distinguished history of advocating for a patient-centric focus in the delivery of health care and mobilizing support for that mission.
Robin founded several award-winning companies that engage patients in sharing their personal medical story to help others, including Health Advocacy Strategies (2002) and Health Perspectives Group (2011). In 2008 she co-founded Allied Health Advocates, the first independent health advocacy company in Washington state. She currently serves on the Seattle University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center Board and the International Women’s Forum – WA Forum (as Program Chair). She co-founded and serves as Board Chair of the Washington State Health Advocacy Association (WASHAA), a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about what health advocacy is and connecting people to health resources.
