Too often, families avoid discussing the important decisions that must be made before an illness, injury, or decline limits our ability to express our desires and/or restricts the options available. This program will help older adults as well as adult children of aging parents prepare for candid, knowledgeable discussion of ways to avoid a nursing home.

Commenting on her experience as a gerontologist, Jeannette tells us that, "After working with older people for more than three decades, I've seen mistakes that need to be avoided, brilliant good choices that need to be copied, and successes that need to be shared. One major lesson is that we always need to have a plan B, and even a C, D, and E. No one knows the future for certain. It is crucial to examine a wide range of options."

7 Actions Anyone Can Take

Author Bio: Jeannette Franks, PhD, is a passionate gerontologist who has taught ethics, grief and loss, and courses on geriatrics and gerontology for the University of Washington for over 25 years.  She received her PhD, MA, and BA from the UW.

In 2014, Dr. Franks published To Move or To Stay Put:  A Guide For Your Last Decades (available at the Bellevue Library)Her next book will be Seven Actions You Can Take to Stay Out of a Nursing Home, the topic of her talk for ENN.  As an example, she points out that one of the most important actions you can take is to understand, create and frequently update your end-of-life preferences. It is particularly important to do this while you are cognitively intact. If, for example, you don’t want a feeding tube if you have Alzheimer’s, that must be documented while you are cogent. That’s only one of the things you can do to prevent spending the last year of your life in a nursing home.

Jeannette was board member of the Bainbridge Island Senior and Community Center and was a hospice volunteer for over 10 years.  She served on the King County and Kitsap County Advisory Councils on Aging for a total of over 15 years.

Jeannette was also recently recognized by the Bainbridge Island Landtrust for her native plant restoration and work with Weed Warriors.
